On Off Everything

On & On – Dyschronometria

on & on은 컴허 제이cumhur jay의 뮤직 비디오로 제작되었다.

Festival Introduction

Echo Chamber: SFX Seoul 2019

Sound Effects Seoul 2019, the 6th edition and 12th year of Korea’s first festival of sound art, presents this edition’s theme: “Echo Chamber”. Besides being an acoustic phenomena which also accurately describes the properties of the concrete exhibition spaces at its headquarters Alternative Space LOOP in Hongdae, “Echo Chamber” is currently used metaphorically to describe a condition where certain ideas, beliefs or data points are reinforced through repetition in a social system. In such an echo chamber, certain ideas or positions come to dominance due to the social and institutional properties of the space, where the ideas continue to resonate much longer than they would have in the open.

In Korea, as all over the world, social intercourse is increasingly overdetermined with a “partisan mentality.” People respond to the information that aligns with their prejudices and become irritated by that which represents conflicting ideas or constituencies. The environment of digital networked communication bolsters the tendency towards confirmation bias and generally coalesces and conforms participation into “grand monologues.”

Echo Chamber refers to an enclosed space designed to produce reverberation. Since the 2000s, the term is also used to describe situations where information is specifically filtered and provided based on user preference on social media and other platforms. The Internet was promoted as “democratic” in the sense that individual dispositions were to be represented with equal importance. However, what had the potential to be a commons has been completely enclosed by the same extractive logics which preceded our age and has become merely a network of commercial platforms which generate profits through “personalized content recommendation systems” and other innovative marketing strategies. The platform becomes an echo chamber where we are swirled in messages which reflect our own concepts, generating a precarious and nervous excitement on the edge of a precipice of which is concomitant and build up fear and mistrust of the other and of the unknown.

The participating artists for Sound Effects Seoul 2019 present works which explore resonance, reverberation, repetition and memory as well as self-reflectivity, confirmation bias and fake news. This edition’s invited artists will exploit sound art’s particular propensities and potential for temporal layering and synaesthetic immersiveness to produce evocative environments where current concerns about loss of critical distance, individual agency and social resilience are reflected and reconsidered. The negative space of the echo chamber acts as a psychic mirror where appearance and reality seem to merge. At Seoul Effects Seoul 2019 Echo Chamber we explore the intimate relation between the hypnotizing, anaesthetizing and hyperbolizing effects of media against the intractably local particularities of constructed space and the people who live and move in them.

The festival takes place simultaneously at Studio Doksan, Alternative Space Loop and archive bomm. Located in the Geumcheon District of Seoul, Studio Doksan is an “Urban Regeneration Space” where a slaughterhouse once stood up until the early 2000s. An essential facility of the modern metropolis, but often banished to the edges of the city and of the consciousness of its citizen, the slaughterhouse might also be said to function as an echo chamber, providing the shadow of mortality to the blazing light of our science. The participating artists project into the three spaces, with sounds which can help us navigate our resonant condition, rich with paradox.

Works

Women’s transformation is innocent

The three-dimensional installation work borrows images of 1980s advertisements, which portray a new modern image of women proud and independent despite the oppressive conditions they had to live under, exposing social values of the time when these images were made. In 2017 women’s fashion referenced the style and spirit of the 80’s woman, with a historical perspective interrogating women's social positions and relationships then and now. This installation references kitchen interiors from the 70s and evokes the reality of traditional women behind the illusion of 'desexualized and confident image of a modern woman'.

Kang Sangwoo’s work starts with certain fantastic images and anecdotes from my memory. In the world of my work, fantasy is a mirror reflection of reality. I try to see how fantastic images and experiences correspond to or are transformed by reality as I examine the asynchrony between reality and illusion. These inquiries are develped employing stereoscopic, installation, painting and drawings of a popular propaganda TV animation series from 1978, “Tori Janggun”, made to enhance children's patriotism and anti-communism.

Lyrics of Cheap Androids 2: Smoke, wind and fishing

Lyrics of Cheap Androids 2: Smoke, wind and fishing The movements of the robots are elaborated through the sounds and shadowy play of their lights which unfolds as they move and illuminate each other. With the sound of the camera shutter, an image is shared with the network, at the same time, smoke is triggered, spreading in the air and gradually taking over the space. Along with the smoke, the space is filled with ambiguity and the attractive movements of the two robots on the cranes taking pictures. Smoke is added to the space in proportion to activity on SNS. The robots slowly disappear and only dance with light and sound.

ByungJun Kwon(born 1971) had his first artistic success as a singer-songwriter in the early 1990s. Today, Kwon’s oeuvre encompasses his six music albums with genres ranging from alternative rock to minimal house, as well as musical sonic interventions and performances, movie soundtracks, theatre, fashion shows and modern dance. He spent the late 2000s in the Netherlands studying sonology and working as a hardware engineer at STEIM, a research center for new musical instruments in the electronic performing arts. Since returning to Korea in 2011, he has developed a certain niche in contemporary (visual) art of employing his characteristic sound and media.

Pareidolic Cymbals

Pareidolic cymbals is a project that is part of a research on sound composition by accumulation of different types of noise. My aim is to use diffused sound materials which by means of superpositions of frequencies, rhythmic phase shifts and acoustic interferences, allow the emergence of a liminal space in which noise and structured sounds oscillate from one to another.
In this specific project I use the cymbal’s ability to saturate a wide range of the sound spectrum, like a bell, in order to produce noises which are “coloured" by dominant frequencies.
The installation, which is made of motors, modified cymbals and electro-magnets, produces blurred sound structures that are closer to sound illusions than to phrased musical compositions. I call this composition mode "pareidolic composition”, pareideolia being the perceptual phenomenon taking place when the brain interprets vague but suggestive stimuli as a familiar form. Like the shapes that can be recognized by looking at the clouds, Pareidolic cymbals produces formless sound which promote a subjective recognition of pattern, confronting the listener with the echo of what he already knows.

Both in his installations and performances, Bégin brilliantly combines the goals of scientist who aspires to the realization of these, to the playful overflow of the artist who can get lost in the maze of creation but who also aspires to an exemplary finality of the work. Multidisciplinary artist, he wonders and distorts by minimizing the active ingredients in the sciences that study meticulously. he offers his own theorems in fields such as mechanics and optics to ultimately develop its own cybernetic and art.

On Off Everything

Dozens of electrical outlets periodically cycle in and out of electricity. Anyone can bring their own electronics to be connected into the apparatus. No matter how periodic the electricity is, the unique characteristics of the devices brought will cause them to turn on and off slightly differently.

Hojun Song's work is about making narratives and bringing questions by making absurd objects like radiation jewelry and the strongest weapon in the world. In 2013, he launched his own small satellite in Kasachstan, Baikonur. His satellite project encompasses from D.I.Y. engineering to T shirts selling to challenge the stereotypical preconception of space program but failed. Naturally, his recent work deals with ironical relationship between romanticism and deconstructionism, especially how society make heroes, by referring new trends of science and technology which embrace uncertainties.
He shares his work and its process to be functional in the society by employing live streaming, sound performance, mass production, and hard core engineering and tries to seek humorous ways to question conventional thoughts on art, design and technology while linking those to our daily issues.

Echo State Network, 2019

Can we hear neurons firing? Does their action potential have pitch and timbre? How do patterns and structures of a neural network look and sound? At the core of Wolfgang Spahn’s installation “Echo State Network” is an analog neural network that modulates sound and light feedback. Spahn has built his analog electronic neurons directly on the basis of models of neurons used in neuroscience. Of course, Spahn’s neurons are much larger than the neurons in your body, but the components he uses, capacitor, resistor, transistor correspond directly to the structure of anatomical neurons and how they store, process and transmit electronic information in bodies.
This completely analog system uses the neural signal to trigger home-made analog synthesizer modules and light objects. Unlike digital systems where the computers simulate neuronal behaviour from mathematical models, Spahn's network is alive processing signal directly, likewise the sound and light effects are produced directly as part of the system. For SFX, Spahn has built an “Echo State Network”. The input layer of that network will has sound and light sensors that react to brightness and particular frequencies. This information is processed in the neural network and then output through a layer of firing neurons. What happens when a living network listens and sees itself in sounds and patterns?

Wolfgang Spahn is an Austrian-German visual artist based in Berlin. His work includes interactive installations, miniature-slide-paintings and performances of light & sound. His art explores the field of analogue and digital media and focusses on both their contradiction and their correlation. That's why he is also specialized in re-appropriated and re-purposed electronic technologies. Spahn teaches at the Professional Association of Visual Artists in Berlin (BBK-Berlin) and is associated lecturer at the Hof University of Applied Sciences. He was lecturer at the Berlin University of the Arts, University of Paderborn, department of media studies as well as at the University of Oldenburg, department of art and visual culture.

Missing Socks 2019

This performative work explains distortions of mass in the indeterminate, missing economic figure of cheap socks, warping time and space as it does the lost experience of the price. It has a molecular structure, where a swing exhibits the destabilizing experience of temporary loss of gravity. Lighting devices evoke the redshift phenomenon, with reflective film performing the distortion of mass, and curtain movements manifesting the unstable air pressure.
In the performance The metronome sound intersects the space, making the time unstable with irregular beats. Brass instruments, played in time with crossed beats, produce various wavelengths in the atmosphere. The brass waves, the red shifts of the swings, and the metronome sound perform the indeterminate and unstable flow of capital and irregular movement of mass which cannot escape a particular space.

Creature

Lee Byungchan(b.1987) has consistently paid attention to the ecosystem of capital. Lee’s practice consists of plastic creatures, investigating into fluctuating phenomena caused by capitalistic obsession with objects and transforming mass of urban environments into time. Visualising the intangible material—capital, he constructs certain paces and spaces by adopting his experiences of capitalistic energy driven into newly-developed cities.

He studied at Sogang University and Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication, MIT Art, Culture and Technology. Films were screened at Cinema Digital Seoul (CinDi), Seoul International Experimental Film Festival (Exis), Busan Asian Short Film Festival (Bisff), and Seoul New Media Festival (Nemaf). His works were introduced in exhibitions including Culture Station Seoul 284, Countdown, Nam June Paik Art Center, X-Sound, Random Access, and MIT's Unbound: Speculations on the Future of the Book. He also worked as a researcher at AT-Lab, Korea National University of Arts.

Transposition, multi-channel site-specific audio installation,2019

I grew up in Toronto, Canada, in a neighbourhood called The Junction. My home was just across the railway from the TheStockyards, an area home to cattle pens, livestock trading companies, and abattoirs that had been in continual operation since the early 1900s. As a child, I played ice hockey in the arena just next to the Maple Leaf poultry processing plant. As a young teen, I would bicycle with my friends around the factories and animal pens. I literally grew up with the sights, the smells, and most importantly the sounds of this industrial activity.

This area, however, has changed a great deal since I was a child. The political, economic, social and cultural forces of gentrification have worked to push much of this activity out of the city. Today, new retail and residential properties occupy the spaces where cattle pens and rendering plants used to stand. It is not surprising, then, that the sound of the area has changed dramatically from what I remember as a child. There are far more cars than trucks, for example, and the sounds of livestock have completely vanished. But industrial activity can be a tenacious presence on the land. The railway’s presence continues to dominate, and to this day there are several meatpacking and processing factories still in operation. These competing activities, and the sounds they give rise to, coexist in an uneasy tension with the newer activities and residents. But coexist they do, and by doing so they combine to provide an aurality that not only harkens back to Toronto’s former identity as “Hogtown” but represents a model of how urban space can develop and yet still encompass a diverse range of human activity.

The piece I am creating for this year’s SFX Seoul, Transposition, responds to the imminent gentrification of Seoul’s own meatpacking district by superimposing the current aurality of Toronto’s Stockyards over that of Seoul’s. Field recordings of both districts will be blended together and presented to gallery goers with the goal of having them hear and reflect upon the way a city’s soundscape both embodies its politics and economy as well as serves as an important marker of social and cultural change. Urban gentrification and transformation is a process that can be heard. But what it tells us we must decide for ourselves…

Something Similar to Me

Something Similar to Me is an essay / poem about the Seeing and Identity in new visual media age, the age of 3D scanning. Two identical avatars of TANIGUCHI himself made using a 3D scanner—as the artist’s “alter egos” of sorts—are placed in a three-dimensional virtual environment. Surrounded by objects reproduced from 3D scans of things from the artist’s daily life environment, the avatars move around progressing along several texts on the subject of “seeing.”

About Seeing Things

Seeing things necessarily involves the process of selecting the objects we look at, whereas the selection of targets (or better, the selection of things to exclude) is certainly based in part on data accumulated through our past experiences. The creation of models and textures through 3D scanning, a technology that has become quite easily accessible in recent years, requires large amounts of data obtained by scanning objects at different times and from different angles. Likewise, the act of “seeing” that appears to be a matter of seconds is in fact a phenomenon that involves accumulations of multiple moments in time.

Using self-built devices and software, Taniguchi has been creating works in a variety of formats in the realms of media art, net art, live performance, video and sculpture among others. Together with WATANABE Tomoya, he is also active as a member of the “Omoide Yokocho Academy of Media Arts and Sciences (OAMAS)” exploring the art form of media art in theory and practice. Main exhibitions include [Internet Art Future]: Reality in Post Internet Era, ICC, Tokyo, 2012; objects thinking too much, Iidabashi Bunmei, Tokyo, 2013; Open Space 2014, ICC, Tokyo, 2014, etc.

The Hwaum Chamber Orchestra was founded in March 1996 in Seoul, Korea. The orchestra, based on the “Ensemble Hwaum”, had already received great responses through their concerts, expanded then to a chamber orchestra with focus on string instruments. For over 20 years, the orchestra has developed passionate and unique sounds and a fair group culture, and made themselves a name as a chamber orchestra. With the self-developed “Hwaum Project”, the orchestra was able to systemize the contents of their performance programs, continuously update the repertoire and expand various formations of wind- and percussion instruments as well as Korean traditional instruments In addition, with continued partnerships with business through shared values, the HwaumChamber Orchestra has become a role model in the world of Korean music and has received much attention for their artistic and public role in music.
